CBD Oil Potency is one of the most important elements to consider when buying any CBD product. There are many things that differentiate one CBD oil from another, but potency or strength is the number one factor in determining the price of a product and its effectiveness. But often this important aspect is overlooked and misunderstood.
The potency or strength of CBD oil depends on how much cannabidiol is in it. But there are other aspects that play an important part in the potency equation.
Measuring the strength of CBD seems straight forward. Examine the label to see how much CBD it contains, right? Because CBD oils can be isolates, distillates, full-spectrum, and broad-spectrum, the straight forward becomes a bit blurred.
You could have 2 different GREENPATH™ CBD oils that are both in a 1 oz bottle. But one has 1,000 milligrams of CBD and one has only 500. The stronger oil is going to be the one with the 1,000 milligrams per 1 oz bottle. In fact, the thousand-milligram bottle is twice as strong. You would need twice as much of the less potent bottle to achieve the same amount.
But that is using an example of the exact same oil. CBD Manufacturers have not decided on a standard of measurement for concentration. The percentage of CBD found in the oil and the CBD itself can greatly vary and this is where things get confusing.
The label may say 99% pure if it contains CBD isolate or only 70% if it has distillate. This may tell you the strength of the oil but not the potency by volume. It’s important to find where the package indicates how much CBD it contains by milligrams.
CBD Isolate is the strongest form of CBD available. It uses solvents to manufacture cannabidiol from every part of the hemp plant. Isolate is a crystallized CBD that is 99% pure. Isolate is not an oil but instead suspends the crystal in oil.
Broad-Spectrum CBD Oil
Broad Spectrum CBD oil has been minimally processed and contains the widest range of cannabinoids and nutrients. Simply put, it contains the broadest spectrum of cannabinoids except for THC.
Full-Spectrum CBD Oil
It has everything found in hemp including a small percentage of THC. Read more here.
CBD distillates are less refined and contain more THC than the .03% limit set by federal law.
Why is Full-Spectrum Hemp Extract the Best?
Full-spectrum hemp extract is just that, pure hemp extract with everything that is naturally occurring in the plant present. Full-spectrum includes all the healing and beneficial compounds and less than <.3% THC. That is not enough to get any high associated with THC but it is just enough to trigger something called the entourage effect.
The entourage effect is a reaction that occurs when a combination of cannabinoids are present in the body at the same time. So a tiny amount of THC literally enhances all the positive effects of the Hemp Extract. Studies reveal that the therapeutic properties found in Hemp Extract were not as effective without that tiny fraction of THC. This synergistic interaction makes Full-Spectrum Hemp Extract the most productive choice.
How Is Strength Determined?
Measuring the strength of CBD oil isn’t as simple as looking on the bottle because the CBD can be Full Spectrum, Broad Spectrum, or Isolate. You could theoretically have two different CBD oils for 30 milligrams and they could be completely different concentrations because there is no standard measurement within the industry.
Some CBD makers list purity, while others list percentage by volume, and still, others list the CBD isolate. The ingredients may tell you the strength of the CBD in the oil, but it doesn’t tell you how potent the CBD is by volume. Even if you find out the amount of CBD in the bottle, it doesn’t tell you exactly since there is no industry standard to measure the potency.
Even the most reputable CBD manufacturers are deceptive with the way they list this information on the label. They will list the hemp extract as 43mg but list the phytocannabinoids as 25mg for a single dosage for a .5ML dropper. That would make the entire bottle over 2,500mg which is impossible for a 1oz bottle.
Don’t be fooled by products that are hemp seed oil and have no mention of cannabidiol or hemp extract. These are completely different products.
Determining CBD oil strength is much clearer for a laboratory technician. According to Bel Costa Labs, manufacturers test for strength at every stage in the supply process. CBD manufacturers do this to ensure quality, consistency, and legal compliance. But its the final test of the product that determines what is on the label.
When testing for CBD Oil Strength, there a 14 major cannabinoids including CBD and THC. The test results from an independent lab show the percentage of CBD and other compounds. Reliable CBD manufacturers will provide these results on their website and their packaging.
Today’s CBD market places a premium on potency, but there is still so much that we don’t really know. Nothing is standardized in the CBD market. A dose that works for one person might be totally ineffective for another.
When it comes to CBD and our bodies and metabolism nothing is standard.
Does CBD Strength Matter?
The stronger a CBD oil, the higher it’s potency is and the more effects it produces. But what exactly is considered high potency CBD? According to Dr. Adie Rae, an academic researcher with a Ph.D. in neuroscience who has been studying cannabinoids since 2004, anything below 35mg per serving is not considered high potency.
“When I’m buying hemp extract, I go for 50 milligrams CBD per milliliter,” Rae said. That’s high concentration of CBD, and you won’t find a high-concentration CBD oil product below $100.”
Research is ongoing but most experts will agree that CBD on its own is not going to be effective as Full-Spectrum oil. CBD is the most effective when it takes advantage of the entourage effect. The entourage effect is CBD’s interaction with other cannabinoids and terpenes in the oil. CBD products have to legally have to contain less than .3% of THC. The THC helps bind the CBD to the receptors and helps the entire process. In other words, a little bit of high-potency, Full-Spectrum CBD goes a long way. You should ultimately choose a high-potency CBD oil that contains the most ingredients possible.
Sublingual CBD is Best
Consuming CBD as an edible reduces most of its effectiveness. The availability of CBD to go to the bloodstream and produce therapeutic effects is only 5%. So only a fraction of the CBD oil you eat is making it into your bloodstream. The best way to ingest CBD oil is sublingually (hold it under your tongue for as long as possible). This keeps the CBD safe from digestive enzymes that break it down.
Take some black pepper when you ingest your CBD. Piperine is a molecule in black pepper that helps shut down the metabolizing enzymes in the liver. this gives CBD a better chance to be absorbed.
Benefits of CBD Oil
While there isn’t conclusive data to support that CBD directly effects anxiety, pain, insomnia, and muscle recovery, researchers agree that it has a lot of potentials to reduce inflammation and therefore helps manage these issues. CDB oil may offer relief to many people without fostering an addiction to chemical opioids or antidepressants.
